Gray Hat SEO 2021

What Is Gray Hat SEO?

Like many SEOs, there are different opinions on what gray basket SEO is.

Take the first page of Google's results on "What is Gray Gray SEO" and you'll see articles with a mix of definitions, which will fall into these categories in detail:

It’s a mix of white hat and black hat techniques.

This is a trick that is currently either a white or black hat but changing the way search engines work can have the opposite effect in the future.

There is a similarity between these two interpretations.

Gray hat SEO is not a black hat or a white hat but something in the middle. Either a transition between the two or a combination of the two.

That is a vague line.

It's not something you want to voluntarily suggest to Google that you're doing. There is no such thing as a penalty. This does not have to be a bad practice, but it is done for the purpose of moving forward in the rankings.

Why Do These Definitions Matter?

Basically, the use of the word white, black, and gray hat is arbitrary.

The debate is what helps SEO practitioners keep checking while working on a website they don’t own.

Black hat techniques pose a conscious risk against search engine guidelines.

Similarly, websites that violate the guidelines may be penalized entirely or partially banned by search engines.

If the website is not it's own it is very serious.

If the business is no longer found through the main organic source, you may lose the largest source of income.

In the absence of a Board of Governors, there is little to go to the clients of SEO seekers, except:

“Do you use only white hat techniques?”

A question I’ve heard prospective clients ask.

Examples

What are some activities you could place in the black, white, and gray hat categories?

Link Building

Google’s Webmaster Guidelines state:

“Any links intended to alter a site's ranking in PageRank or Google search results may be considered part of the link scheme and in violation of Google's Webmaster Guidelines.”

White Hat

Create valuable content for the purpose of educating, informing, or entertaining users.

It just so happens that the content is so good that other sites want to link to it as a source.

Black Hat

Private Blog Network (PBN), you can do this by adding a link to your website on any blog comment and paying for the links.

This is clearly against the webmaster guidelines of Google and Bing.

Gray Hat

Content creation for the sole purpose of obtaining links may be considered contrary to Google's guidelines as defined above.

However, if that content is really relevant and valuable to visitors to the site, is it really against the guidelines? A gray area.

Content Quality

Bing's guidelines on website content clearly state that there must be quality:

“Most ads or affiliate links do not rank well on Bing that show websites that are thin on content or otherwise redirect visitors to other sites. Your content should be easy to navigate, the website should be rich and attractive for website visitors and provide the information they want.”

Google's advice is the same. The quality of the content is important for ranking.

Still, there are some gray areas.

White hat SEO

Content is written to make the user navigate, answer questions, and make the user happy.

This is great because it is friendly and helpful to help you find the right audience in search engines.

Content is written with the needs of the users first.

Black hat SEO

Content is typically a door page, removed from other websites without adding extra value or containing keyword spamming.

A copy is for search engines only.

Gray hat SEO

Content is written entirely for the purpose of ranking the page well. It only has enough keywords to drive visitors to the page but doesn't really add much value.

This page will be equally useful for visitors without text but with that its location is good. A general SEO practice.

Is it in the spirit of the guidelines or is it against them?

The Ways They Differ

It’s not just in their definitions that black, white, and gray hat techniques differ. It’s in their risks and rewards too.

Risk

Implementing a black, white or gray hat technique takes all the risk.

Black hat techniques carry the risk of manual actions.

If you are caught violating search engine guidelines, you or the website may be penalized for removing content from the search index.

The white hat technique runs the risk of not working.

The web can be a great place if every website is played by search engine rules, but they are not.

Similarly, if your brand is in a highly competitive industry, you may not be able to rank against the competition using black hat techniques.

PBN and other link schemes can be extremely effective. If you decide to play by the rules, you will probably sacrifice high rankings on rare occasions.

There is a risk of fines in the future gray hat technique.

If you’re taking action, you may not know the out-of-line guidelines that search engines might tighten algorithms to crack down on IT.

Longevity

The black hat technique can be effective for a short period of time.

But if they are quickly discovered by search engines, the results may be short-lived.

Investing time and money in creating a private blog network that is explored and destroying those links may go in vain.

The white hat technique is more likely to stand the test of time.

If the search engine guidelines for promoting quality on the Internet are in place, then the definition of quality is not likely to have changed to that extent as it is not always out of line with the sudden guidelines at the time.

From time to time gray hat techniques can be further scrutinized by search engines which may reduce their effectiveness.

Case Studies

Your approach is critical if you use your existing work to win new customers or secure further advertising.

Talking about your PBN plan won’t win you your next search award.

This can make consumers very nervous about the risk.

Most employers, if they know a lot about SEO, are not willing to risk someone openly blaming their success in the content field.

Successfully used white hat SEO techniques show great skill.

Playing through search engine rules can be a slower and more frustrating process than black hat SEO.

Definitely shouting about it if you succeed without cutting corners.

In fact gray hat SEOs form a big part of any SEO campaign. By the way, this has been widely accepted in the SEO community.

Although they divide white hat / black hat for the purpose of manipulating search results, they pay dividends and do not violate webmaster guidelines.

Most people who read this article may have a different opinion about what a white or gray hat is.

By the way, this activity is not really forbidden. Innovative link building campaigns win awards.

Discussion of a strategic content plan designed to get more of your category pages will be effective in the interview.

Conclusion

White hat SEO might seem like an obvious way to go if you want to know that you are above condemnation.

Does this make you competitive enough though?

Gray hat SEO is sitting somewhere in the middle.

According to this author, white hat SEO and carefully considered gray hat SEO is probably your safest way.
